Taxco – the Herbie town

The light from the sun is falling soft and beautiful on the houses in the mountains, while Nina and I are reaching the city Taxco, which is located nearly 200 km south west of Mexico City. The bus ride is only 2,5 hours so we have decided to visit this small city with white horses in the mointains on a day trip while Johan is at a wedding in Monterrey and Celine is on a 11 days journey around Chiapas.

Taxco, is known for being the silvertown which is a old colonial city and is the city where Spain establish their first mind in whole Latine America back en 1528. Taxco is located in 1931 meters above sea-level and has a population of 52.000.

While I’m walking out of the bus to enjoy a day in the silvertown, would I rather call it “The Herbie Town” than “Silvertown”, since there is a lot of white Herbie taxies waiting at the stations to get costumers.

The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed this Saturday morning when Nina and I are walking to reach the Zocalo, which is the centrum of the city where the Santa Prisca Church is located. The church is the tallest building in the city with its yellow/orange colored stones. – Actually from it was build in 1958 and until 1806 was it the highest building in whole Mexico.

When we are entering the Zocalo square am I getting a smile on my face when I’m seeing a Herbie Taxi coming around the corner with nearly 20 balloons hanging out from the door. It is stoppen in front of the church from where two people are coming out with bags and balloons, which they are going to sell doing the day. From time to time am I getting surprised how many things there can be in a small car!

The little Río

While Nina and I are sitting in a Herbie on the way up to “El Cristo Monumental de Taxco” do I understand how they can have so many things in this little car, because they have removed the passenger front seat, so it is easier to get in and out of the little Herbie.

The lowest gear is used in the Herbie while we are claiming up to El Cristo Monumental which is 20 meters high and have been looking over Taxco since September 2002. From this viewpoint is the Santa Prisca Church easy to spot since it is the only highest point in the city, while the maintains can be seen in the background.

For the majority is Taxco called the Silvertown, and when we are getting back to the Zocalo is it easy to see why, since there is so many jewelry shops with silver so you literally can pick and choose the shop you like the most, which we are doing shortly before we are getting on the bus back to Mexico City.
